Campus Fun Days!

First couple weeks of class leaving you overwhelmed? You need a little extra fun! Lucky for you the Student Life organization understands where you are coming from.

Truax campus will have it's campus wide fun day today (September 9th) from 11-6pm. Be ready for food, fun, and friends. There will be lots of live entertainment ranging from a DJ all the way to a dance group. Fellow students will be helping make tie dye T-shirts. There is something for everyone to help you take a much needed break.

The West campus has plans to do their Campus Fun Day on Tuesday the 14th. More information to come on their plans. But definitely plan on having a great time!

Downtown Campus (DTEC) will be holding theirs on Thursday the 16th 11-3pm. Among other things you can look forward to Yoga, Jewlery Making, Guitar Hero Tornaments, and a Ceramic Sale. Male, Female, Young, Old this Campus Fun Day will not dissapoint.

Surving the First Month of Class

Here are just a few helpful hints to help YOU get the most out of your MATC experience.

1. Come to Class, Come to Class, Come to Class!!- The first few weeks are very important, it will usually set the tone for the semester. –Daniel Imsland

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions. By asking questions I found out about the writing center, I found out about aditional labs where more computers were avaible, I found out about tutoring and how to get help. –Mandy McDermott

3. VERY IMPORTANT- If you drive, remember where you park every time. I try to park in the same general area every day. It is easy to forget where you parked. – Matthew Virnig

CONGRATUALATIONS 2010 MADISON COLLEGE GRADUATES!!!

Wow, graduation is fast approaching! I hope those who are graduating will join me in participating in the ceremony on May 15th at 10:00 am at the Madison Coliseum, please go to our Student Life Department to find out more about how to participate (you already pay the $20 graduation fee anyway, right?).

It is a wonderful experience, where relatives and friends along with others graduating and their families and friends will be witnessing this truly awesome and wonderful event to celebrate your accomplishments! There is a lot of late nights and early mornings working on homework, projects, papers, and presentations; commuting to school, planning out schedules, meeting deadlines, participating in classes we aren't always strong in, and dedication of a large amount of time and energy into studying that we should all be recognized for so show it off!!

I hope to see you there!

Finals Week!!!

For many of you it is beginning this week, and for other next week, either way I just want to encourage everyone to stop for 5 minutes and relax and take in a deep breath, get up to look out the window, or anything that will get your mind off the stress for a few moments...

Okay, now off to doing well and staying positive and focused. You can do it!!!

Student Senate Elections!

Wisconsin Statute 38.145 states that an elected body of students have the right to spend Student Activities funds in a manner that they see will benefit students. The Madison College Student Senate is currently holding officer elections. Voting is done online in the link below and you will need your student ID number. Each candidate, even ones running for the same position, get their own page with their bios. Please read all the information for each candidate and decide if each student is capable of spending YOUR money wisely. Because of space restrictions candidates running for the same position have ballots in different pages. Read everything carefully and voting for more then one person for the same position is allowed if you think they all qualify. Voting ends Tuesday, April 27 at 6 PM.

IMPORTANT: The are people running as "write-in" candidates that don't have their names on the ballots. It is wise to consider all the options of who spends your money, so go check out some of the campus's bulletin boards.

Stressed?

I know I am; it is hard to be a student and have a lot to do. Especially when midterms are here, or you are just getting them finished. My recommendations are do not put off your final projects once you have the ability to work on them, know the content and get it done. The last thing you want is to come in at the end of the semester and not be able to print off your final project. I have been there, and it is not an easy thing to deal with. Also, make sure you are getting plenty of sleep and a good nutritional diet. If you are stressed or need to vent feel free to do so, we have counselors here at MATC who would love to sit down and talk. Go to a-z index on MatcMadison.edu web page and look up counselors. If you can not figure that out go to this web address which will lead you strait to their home page at MATC http://matcmadison.edu/counseling.

Hey Madison College Students,
Today was our first true rainy day of the year. Just as a reminder, the part of the student parking lot that is adjacent to the instructor/staff parking lot tends to flood. Security has started to block this section off. The college is currently working on this issue, but for the short term this is a good solution. And remember, if you’re worried about flooding, the 2nd parking lot across the street is much higher.

Greetings Students!
Have you heard about the 2010 Green Energy Summit in Milwaukee? For three days you can enjoy speakers who are prominent figures in multiple industries which utilize and develop green energy, survey exhibits and demonstrations of new groundbreaking technologies, and even attend a job fair! This event has something to offer EVERY student, not just engineers and eco-warriors. This year marks the first year that students may attend the 2010 Green Energy Summit in Milwaukee for free, visit http://greenenergysummit.us/ for more information and to register. Advance registration is required to attend the conference for free. The Summit takes place March 24th-26th and there is a free bus for students to and from the summit on Thursday and Friday, http://matcmadison.edu/announcements/free-bus-trip-green-energy-summit! As an added bonus for the many of you who have taken Chemistry 1 and/or 2 here at Madison College, you might be interested to know that our own Dr. Ken Walz, who researches in the field of environmental chemistry, will be presenting there as well. You can pick up a form at either of the Student Life offices and reserve your spot. It promises to be a real blastand I hope you'll take this opportunity to expand your knowledge of real world advancement. See you there!

Performing Arts Interest Group

This semester the student ambassadors are starting up some online discussion groups for the students here. One of them is the Performing Arts group which is designed to let people know about what's going on in Madison's film, theater and scenes around town. I'm the moderator for this group and I've put up a lot of links that point to free events that I hope people will take advantage of.

Textbook Rental

The Madison College Bookstore and Student Senate have been working together to make renting textbooks a reality. Rental textbooks cost half the amount that new books and a third less then used books. It's a safer route then buying a book and selling it back at the end of the semester because you safe the money up front and you don't have to worry about new editions coming up and making your textbook worthless. It's really a great program and it can save students lots of money. Right now there are only 10 titles in the bookstore that can be rented. What are the odds that you will be in one of those few classes that have the textbooks available for rent? Why don't we have more? The biggest reason: most instructors don't know about it. So what can we do to fix this? Go to all your instructors and tell them that when they order textbooks for their classes to request that the books be used in the Rental Program. Tell them to pass the message to other instructors. If they have questions (or if you have questions) call the bookstore and they will be happy answer anything you might need to know. If you want to be more involved in expanding the rental program contact the Student Senate at senate@matcmadison.edu.

It's certainly looking like this year's Groundhog's Day is a prelude to more winter ahead of us with all the snow coming down.
The Ambassador team is staying busy with school events and brainstorming new ways to improve every student's experience at Madison College. To this end, we would love to hear any feedback or suggestions you have. We're here to help! So whether you notice someone wearing an Ambassador jacket in the hall, or you want to stop by our office to ask a question, don't be shy! Even if we don't know the answers ourselves, we know how to help you find them.

Food Service Committee Needs Members

Are you tired of paying too much for food? Do you want better selection of choices at the cafeteria? The problem is not going to go away on it's own. The Food Service Committee is a group made up of Staff and Students working together to overcome problems with the Madison College Market Place. This committee cannot do anything without members and it needs your help. Staying Healthy this Season

As we are all returning for classes, it is worth mentioning that we are in the midst of cold and flu season. I would like to inform all of you on ways to stay healthy as we are all coming in contact with many people everyday here at Madison College and anywhere else we should be going.

- Wash your hands. We are in public places everyday that is filled with all kinds of bacteria. A simple 30 second wash with antibacterial soap will do wonders in decreasing your chance of becoming ill.

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Most bacteria enter our body through the mucous membranes in this location.

- Exercise. 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day does great things for your health.

- Drink water. Everyone should be drinking about eight, 8oz. glasses of water a day. Most people are unaware that by the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. So drink before you feel thirsty.

- Get fresh air by cracking a window at night.

- Make sure all food is cooked, stored and reheated properly. Avoid eating out.

- Decrease stress. We all know it, and as students/parents/employees it can be difficult to do, but stress causes a lot of harm to our bodies.

- Get 8 hours of sleep a night. It may seem impossible at times, but try to get a little more sleep than you may usually get.

I personally just got over the flu this weekend. Had I been getting adequate sleep, exercise, and decreased my stress levels I may have avoided it altogether. Unfortunately, I am paying the price by trying to get caught up on school work. Hopefully these tips will help all of you by not making the same mistakes I did.

Student Senate has 5 empty seats and is looking to fill them up as soon as possible. Joining is simple at this time of year; just fill and application, show up to 3 consecutive meetings and show interest and dedication and the senate body will vote. You will earn valuable time management, communication, and organizational skills. You get to serve the whole student body and act as the link between the student body and administration. Meetings are Thursdays at 5:00PM-7:00PM in the Administration Building Room 122 (across the courtyard from the cafeteria at Truax). Send questions to Senate@matcmadison.edu

Phi Theta Kappa

Welcome back everybody, as the second week of classes progresses everyone is getting back into the swing of things here. As one of the VP's for Phi Theta Kappa part of that means we're looking to get current members more involved and make everybody who is eligible aware of the opportunities that come with joining.
If you're currently a member and would like to get more involved with the chapter and our projects our weekly meeting are scheduled for 1:30pm at Truax on Mondays (In our office in room 131) or Downtown at 3:45pm on Wednesdays (In the Student Life office). We would love to see you there!
If there's a project you'd like to the see the chapter take on suggest it! You can contact the officers of the chapter via e-mail (listed on our blackboard page), better yet come to a meeting and introduce yourself. And we would love to see any volunteers who could help us out with the coordinating the Distinguished Teacher Award or the upcoming Induction of new members.

Speaking of new members... If you're eligible to join Phi Theta Kappa you'll receive an invitation in the mail in the coming weeks. This means that you've kept your GPA at 3.5 or better for at least 12 credits. Congratulations! If you decide to join, you pay a onetime lifetime membership fee and gain access to all the resources of the Phi Theta Kappa organization on campus. We encourage our members to apply for some of the transfer scholarships available specifically to members, which includes the Jack Kent Cook award. This is a $90,000 award two of our chapter members have won in the last two years! We're hoping to have a third winner this year.
We also encourage members to become Enhanced Members by participating in our events over the course of the semester. If you become an Enhanced Member you'll receive an award and an invitation to the Enhanced Member Banquet we hold each semester, you're also far more likely to have the opportunity to travel to the regional or national conferences we attend (next up Orlando!).
My best recommendation for the organization though is the people you meet. I've met some great people though getting involved with our chapter and I hope to meet many more.

Get Involved at Madison College

Hello to EVERYONE and Welcome!

I hope your first week of classes went well and you are all getting back into school mode! I know school can be a lot of work and we all have a hundred other things going on in our lives, but I just wanted to tell you how much fun it can be to get involved here at Madison College. Whether it's Student Clubs, Intramural Sports, or even working a campus jobs, these are all great ways to help you meet others just like you! These great opportunities will really help you enjoy your time here at Madison College to the fullest.

This is my third semester at Madison College already, and I'm wishing I would've gotten involved sooner. I'm now a Student Ambassador and a member of the Marketing Club. Through these extracurriculars I have met so many more people and I'm having a blast. They are many clubs that are usually related to a specific program. Becoming a member of your program or something that you're interested in could really make your resume stand out!
